Residential phone wiring, in particular when it comes to supporting DSL, tends to be weakest in older homes. Old homes tend to have "quad wire", which is untwisted, two-pair wire. It is color coded Red/Green for line 1, and Yellow/Black for line 2. Red and yellow are the ring wires, and green/black are the tip wires, respectively. For installations requiring voice or fax only, quad wire won't pose a problem. The only issue arises if the wiring is daisy-chained from one phone jack to the the other, preventing things like the installation of a fax sharing device, or designating a paticular jack to a dedicated purpose, such as FAX or DSL only.
For new or retrofit installations, we install CAT-3 for voice/fax/DSL, and CAT-5 or better for data installations. All installations are run in a star topology (each jack leads to a central point) and is terminated neatly on termination blocks. This type of installation allows you to designate a paticular jack for special purpose, such as DSL only, leaving other jacks voice capable. Data cables are terminated neatly onto patch panels and labeled. Structured wiring is no longer just for businesses. Most new homes now employ structured wiring practices.
